Canada is a diverse nation, composed of citizens from virtually every nationality and culture in the world. The country was built by immigrants and more that 200,000 new immigrants are still welcomed every year. The majority of these immigrants possess skills the Canadian government believes will contribute to Canadian society. Before being accepted, an applicant for immigration must persuade Canadian immigration officials that he or she will make a valuable contribution to Canada. For the fourth consecutive year the United Nations Human Development Report has ranked Canada as the number one country in the world. These reports are based on the life expectancy, educational opportunities and income of Canadian residents, as compared to over 170 other countries. In the past six years Canada has been ranked the best in the world five times. The top ten countries in the world, according to the 1997 Human Development Report, are: |

For
the fourth year in a row Canada has experienced a decrease in the number
of crimes committed. Violent crime decreased 4% from 1994 to 1995. The
murder rate also decreased 3% in 1995 and has reached its lowest level
since 1969.

The Greater Toronto Area, with a population of 4.2 million people and an area of 7,200 square kilometres, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in North America, larger than Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, or Washington, D.C. Nevertheless, the Greater Toronto Area is one of the safest places in North America with a low crime rate including a decrease in the number of murders from 1994 to 1995. Canada has also been ranked by the World Bank as the second wealthiest country in the world. Only Australia is wealthier. The ten wealthiest countries, according to the World Bank, are: |
